Sachiko shows off our bag production. We are the TokyoBags!
Edit: I meant to give some more background to this eco-bag production movement called Morsbags. Kristen over at MediaTinker (and head of the TokyoBags Pod) has mentioned this a few times now, most recently yesterday after our sewing day. She has even posted her modified pattern for all the world to use.
The idea behind this worldwide, grassroots, community project is to reduce the number of plastic shopping bags that end up in water-ways causing trouble and death to wildlife. Check out the Morsbags Site for full details and start your own sewing pod or if you are in Tokyo join ours. We spend the afternoon, cutting, sewing, ironing, chatting, snacking and drinking wine. We are also taking donations of any old sheets, pillow-cases, fabric, futon covers, table-cloths etc as these are remade into these fun and colourful shopping bags that we are planning to give out around Tokyo - probably around local supermarkets. This is a totally non-commercial and volunteer project.
I have been carrying around my own shopping bag in my handbag for a while now. Most shops are fine when you tell them you don’t want a bag. Still a way to go in Japan - the land of overpackaging everything.
I am sure we are going to cause a few strange looks when we start to give out free bags to strangers…. but am also giving them out to friends so let me know if you want one and I will give one to you next time I see you. They are all free of course and it is estimated that each bag will reduce the number of discarded plastic bags by hundreds each year.

Wedding party!
Ashley with a bucket o’ Hoegaarden
Yes it has really been 12 months. Put this in your diary as it will be heaps of fun. Also, Friday the 29th is the Ashman’s birthday. It is a work night for my love puppet so please come along and help him celebrate in style.
The party is on both the Friday and Saturday nights and will be “beer buster” style. So that means you pay your entrance fee, get your
plastic cup, and just keep passing to me or the Ashman or other staff for refills - Beer, boxed wine, shou-chu and soft-drinks. If you want any cocktails it is on an extra cash basis. We will be making yummy platter food all night as well including lots of vegetarian selections for my newly vegan friends. We expect this party to extend well into the daylight.
(A special thanks to MJ for use of her photo on the flier.)

Don’t break a fire extinguisher inside a small bar. White crap over everything! Is going to take ages to clean it up.
‘Tis better than a fire though. The whole place was filled with gas from the extinguisher explosion plus the white dust settled on EVERYTHING. The photo shows how “smokey” the bar was.
EDIT: Just got home and jumped in the shower to wash all this chalky crap off. It permeates EVERYTHING. Fortunately it was just the old, out of date fire extinguisher that we had in the closet ready to throw away that was broken. We had already bought a new one that it in handy access for the bar staff. (Just learned tonight where it lives so it wasn’t a total waste of time). But it took an age to clean up and I suspect there will be dust settling for a few days yet.
Is exposure to this stuff bad for one’s health? We were totally gassed out.

Made a big bottle of my fave drink. Ready in 12months! yum!
Feeding frenzy as new girls arrive with suitcases full of clothes. It was a fun afternoon. I picked a pair of jeans (that FIT!!!) and a sweater. I was mainly sitting on the sidelines watching it all happen. Some girls were able to take home some real gems.
