The traditional fairy stories usually have frightening themes also. Max could enjoy the idea of the wolf eating grandma, or the witch putting Hansel and Gretel in an oven. A monster seems to be a universal theme for childhood. No doubt there are many theories about that. Barbara

The witch in Hansel and Gretel is largely misunderstood IMHO. There she is, having built her dream house (albeit out of yummy gingerbread), and these two brats come in and start eating it without a please or thank you between them.

Now the wolf eating Grandma is not a happy tale I grant you.

Max totally loves monsters right now and he sees them and hears them everywhere. He thought there were monsters in the dark trees in Meiji Jingu tonight and thinks that every bump in the night is a monster. He loves to scare himself but he gives himself nightmares too though.
