    Yes I was very close but I couldn’t attract his attention.  He was totally on duty making friends with the Japanese business leaders.  I was up the back with the aussies drinking wine and causing trouble.  smirk

    Was he sanctimonious or affable in his speech and demeanour? Not sure how successful he will be running our country.You have to admire his achievements in reaching the top job. His wife’s business acumen would be his best asset. Barbara

    Very focussed on Japan - Australia FTA and lots of arse kissing to the Japanese. 

    His words on micro-economic reform were very Paul Keeting-like but delivered with a better demeanour.  Quite affable and not what you would expect from a Labor guy.  Very focussed on the East Asia region for trade, education and co-operation.  Mentioned the close relationship Australia has to the US quite alot which made the Australians squirm a bit.
